A character greeting can invite a conversation while leaving the reader free to decline. It can also accidentally decide that the reader already agrees to the relationship, the setting and every action that follows.
For a fictional adult conversation, write the boundary before polishing the dialogue. Nomi and SweetChat document different places for this information. The useful comparison is where a lasting preference belongs and how much a first message should assume.
A preference that applies tomorrow
Nomi’s Backstory+ guide includes a Boundaries section for limits or preferences the companion should understand. It also separates current roleplay from enduring background.
Consider a non-explicit original scene between two adult travel writers. One prefers slow conversational pacing and wants to choose their own actions. That preference should remain understandable whether they are discussing a train journey today or editing photographs tomorrow.
A concise note might be: “Leave the reader’s decisions and physical actions for the reader to describe. Ask before changing the relationship’s direction.” This is our suggested writing, not an official prompt or a tested guarantee.
A boundary does not need to list every possible setting. Give it a clear behavior that can be recognized in a reply.
A greeting that starts something
SweetChat’s creator explainer describes personality, hobbies, relationship style and a custom greeting. Those fields allow an author to make the character’s manner and initial situation coherent. The page does not establish a separate equivalent to every Nomi Backstory+ section.
For the travel writer, the greeting could explain that two routes are available and ask which seems more interesting. It should not announce that the reader has packed, boarded the train and agreed to a romantic weekend.
The difference is observable in the text before any AI reply is generated:
| Opening choice | Effect on the reader |
|---|---|
| Ask which route to discuss | Leaves a decision available |
| State that the reader already booked one | Removes the decision |
| Explain the character’s preference | Gives the character a viewpoint |
| Describe the reader’s feelings as settled | Assigns an inner state without a reply |
This editing step is useful even when a service provides no dedicated boundary field.
Keep the standing note separate from today’s task
Do not place “We are currently choosing the coastal route” inside a long list of permanent relationship rules. Once the decision changes, the old instruction becomes clutter. Conversely, a durable limit should not be buried in a one-time greeting that may no longer be prominent later.
If an actual conversation ignores the preference, stop and revise the relevant note or scene. You can observe whether a later reply leaves the next decision open. We did not perform that experiment on either service, and one compliant reply would not prove universal reliability.
Choose Nomi when you specifically want its documented context sections for organizing an ongoing preference. SweetChat’s described character and greeting controls can serve a clear opening brief. In both workflows, the reader retains their own choices, and the provider’s content rules continue to apply.
